How to build a frame for composite decking

Building a frame for composite decking is an important step in the installation process. Here are the general steps to follow:

  1. Measure and mark the area: Begin by measuring the area where you plan to install the decking. Use stakes and string to mark the perimeter of the area.
  2. Install the support posts: Use pressure-treated lumber to create support posts for the frame. These posts should be spaced no more than 1.2m apart, and should be set into concrete footings. Use a level to ensure the posts are plumb.
  3. Install the ledger board: Attach a ledger board to the house or other structure where the decking will be installed. The ledger board should be level and securely fastened to the structure with lag screws or through bolts.
  4. Install the joists: Install the joists perpendicular to the support posts, with the ends resting on the ledger board and the support posts. The joists should be spaced no more than 30cm apart, and should be secured in place with metal joist hangers.
  5. Install the cross bracing: Install cross bracing between the support posts and the joists to add additional stability to the frame. Use metal brackets to secure the bracing in place.
  6. Install the perimeter boards: Install perimeter boards around the edge of the frame, using screws to secure them in place. These boards will serve as the edge of the decking and can be used to install fascia boards or railing components.
  7. Install any additional components: Depending on the specific design of your deck, you may need to install additional components such as stair stringers or skirt boards. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for these components.

Remember to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific composite decking product, as installation methods can vary. With a properly built frame, your composite decking will be secure and durable for years to come.
